Beetroot Poriyal


  • Beetroot – 2
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Red onion – 1
  • Green chillies – 2
  • Ginger – 1/4
  • Garam masala – A pinch
  • Asafoetida – A pinch
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Coriander leaves – Few
  • Coconut – 1/2
  • Oil – Required
  • Salt – Required

How to Prepare

Total Preparation time 25-30 minutes

  1. Wash the beetroot and cut into small pieces, chop onions, chop coriander leaves, grate coconut, chop ginger, chop green chillies and keep aside
  2. Heat the pan with oil, then add mustard seeds
  3. Once it crackles, add urad dal, cumin seeds, asafoetida and fry for 30 seconds
  4. Then add chopped onions, green chilies and curry leaves and saute it well
  5. After that add turmeric powder, ginger and fry it till raw smell goes off
  6. Then add beetroot and required salt and mix it well
  7. Add 50ml water, mix well, close the lid and cook them for 10 minutes till beetroot get softer
  8. Open the lid, add 1 tsp oil and garam masala
  9. Fry well for 5 minutes in low flame then add grated coconut stir them well
  10. Then turn off the flame and finally garnish with coriander leaves over the poriyal
  11. Now the Beetroot Poriyal is ready to serve.
