Vazhaipoo Poriyal


  • Banana Flower – 1
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Red onion – 1
  • Green chillies – 2
  • Ginger – 1/4
  • Garlic cloves – 3
  • Coriander seed powder – 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida – A pinch
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Coriander leaves – Few
  • Coconut – 1/2
  • Oil – Required
  • Salt – Required

How to Prepare

Total Preparation time 25-30 minutes

  1. Soak the banana flower in buttermilk for 10 minutes and chop it then add salt and soak it in water and keep aside
  2. Chop onions, grate coconut, chop coriander leaves, chop ginger, chop garlic nicely, chop green chillies and keep aside
  3. Heat the pan with oil, then add mustard seeds
  4. Once it crackles, add urad dal, cumin seeds, asafoetida and fry for 30 seconds
  5. Then add chopped onions, green chilies and curry leaves and saute it well
  6. After that add turmeric powder, ginger, garlic and fry it till raw smell goes off
  7. Then add chopped banana flower and required salt and mix it well
  8. Add 100ml water, mix well, close the lid and cook them for 20 minutes till water drained
  9. Open the lid, add 1 tsp oil, fry well for 5 minutes in low flame
  10. Then add grated coconut stir them well
  11. Then turn off the flame and finally garnish with coriander leaves over the poriyal
  12. Now the Vaazhaipoo Poriyal is ready to serve.
