Venpongal – வெண் பொங்கல்


  • Green Rice – 250g
  • Moong dhal – 250g
  • Ginger – 1
  • Cashewnuts – 10
  • Cumin seeds – 2 tsp
  • Pepper seeds – 2 tsp
  • Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
  • Green chilies – 2
  • Ghee – Required
  • Oil – Required
  • Curry leaves – Few
  • Salt – Required

How to Prepare

Total Preparation time: 20-30 minutes

  1. Take a pan, fry rice and moong dhal for 2 minutes in low flame and stir continuously to avoid colour change
  2. Then soak it water for 10 minutes and wash it 2 times and keep aside
  3. Chop the ginger and stir green chillies lengthwise and keep aside
  4. Heat up a pressure cooker and add 2 tbspn ghee and allow it to melt
  5. Add Asafoetida, ginger, green chillies and fry them gently for 1 minutes in low flame
  6. Add rice and dal then add 2 liter water
  7. Add salt and mix it well then close the lid tightly and cook it for 4 whistles in medium flame
  8. After pressure air goes off completely, open the cooker and stir the rice mixture gently
  9. Heat up pan, add ghee and once it melts, add cashew nuts and fry it for 1 minutes
  10. Add cumin seeds, pepper seed, 20-30 curry leaves and saute it for 1 minute
  11. Pour this seasoning into the cooked pongal mixture
  12. Mix it well and transfer it into a bowl
  13. Now the Delicious Venpongal is ready to serve
